Growing up Catholic, Lent was always a big deal in our family. The big decision the day before Ash Wednesday was, "What are you going to give up"? I usually gave up something I enjoyed, like chocolate or junk food. It was always about me though, and had nothing to do with God. I wanted to drop a few pounds in the name of Jesus, yeah right! As I look back at it, I'm actually quite embarrassed.
It's hard to break an old habit. I had the same conversation with a dear loved one today who was trying to decide what to "give up"? They decided instead of giving something up they would make a commitment to go to church. I thought it was a great idea.
God and I had a little talk this evening about what I should do in preparation for Easter. I am going to commit to pray for a special family. I don't want to say too much, but I am begging you all to please pray with me for this family who is in such need but doesn't even know it. God is the only One who can do a miracle in their life. They need a miracle.
Mark 9:21-24
Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"
"From childhood," he answered. "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."
" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."
Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
Please, will you pray with me? They need some rest.

Of course I will Angie.....we should all be praying for the people who need Jesus and don't even realize it....Heck I was one of them once upon a time.
I want to work on giving something back to the Kingdom this Easter. I'm not sure what that will be but I'm working on it with Him. Lets give back to Him and do something to bring Him honor and glory this Easter.
Lent is a HUGE deal and I'm thankful for what you have challenged us to remember to do.

Father God in Jesus name I life up this family to you right now and ask that you would bring Your peace. I thank you that they do not have a God who is unsympathetic toward their pain, but they have a God who bore their pain and suffering on the cross. So Father, let this truth be theirs today and comfort them. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
I love Lent. May be the only one. But I miss it in my new church, so I incorporate some part of it still. I will go to church with Mike tonight and "do" Ash Wednesday. It sure makes Easter even grander if you have walked through forty days in the desert. You experience Good Friday the best you possibly can, and when Easter morning comes, "Alleluia. He is Risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!"
And I can't think of a better gift. A prayer discipline for Lent. I will join you, my friend, in praying for this family.

I used to always give up "something" for Lent too. I do remember one year it was Coca Cola - I had the biggest glass of Coca Cola immediately after Church that year. A few years after that I began to think about Lent and not what I should give up, rather what God gave up for us. He gave His son for our sins. So now, throughout the season of Lent - I focus on Christ and his walk toward the cross. Now I focus on adding something rather than giving up. Adding more prayer, more time in scripture, more prayer time w/ a friend etc. Something that will carry on after Easter Sunday. I will be praying for you as you walk to the cross w/ Christ. I pray that your family feels His presence - your prayers and ours.

What a great idea. I've never really "done" Lent being a Baptist, but I believe that instead of giving "up" something, that praying more or doing more for Him, focusing more on Him would be a much better way to prepare our hearts for Easter...Giving Him more would be so much more effective, to me than to give up, say chocolate,or cokes etc....that is just my opinion. blessings on you and yours today.
I love the idea of praying for someone during Lent! I grew up Baptist as well and I didn't know much about Lent but I have been learning over the years. I will join you in praying for this family. I am also praying for a certain person to come to salvation and I loved the verse you shared!! :o)
